Why a Book Club?

book club

In my workshops, I only teach what I’ve personally experienced or tested, as I want to make sure whatever techniques or theories I’m sharing actually work. I’m still tinkering, a decade later, but I’ve pretty much completely overhauled my life and am much happier than I’ve ever been.

Participants frequently ask me where they should start to begin transforming their own lives and I always respond the same – read.

Books are full of wisdom and reading allows us to really delve deep into many meaningful lessons. Don’t get me wrong, I watch lots of videos and TED talks which are informative and frequently spawn great ideas. But nothing can replace reading a book by a master teacher, where you can pause and reflect after a sentence, a paragraph or a page.

And that’s why I’m starting a Book Club. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of books I’ve read, the books on the Book Club page are those that had a major impact on my own transformation from a Type-A, driven, stressed-out, perfectionist, to a reflective, mindful, content human being achieving much more success than my prior version. They cover a wide range of topics, from higher consciousness to boots-on-the-ground leadership to neuroscience to metaphysics. But each one contained a new perspective, a startling realization or incredibly powerful action steps that lead to real change. As I make new discoveries, the list will continue to grow.

Our "First Book of the Month"

This month, I’d like to highlight The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Such a simple yet profound book. By honing four skills, life changes. It sounds so simple, but like everything related to transforming your life, simple doesn’t necessarily mean easy. The agreements seem simple enough: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions and always do your best. At first glance, seems like a piece of cake! Until you start noticing how many small fibs or little white lies you tell a day. Or how you never noticed how much you take everything personally. And assumptions? All day long! Always doing your best was the one I thought I’d have the most trouble with, but then discovered that doing our best is not about perfection, but simply intention and awareness.

Told within the framework of a Toltec tale, this book can change your life if you’re open to its teachings. By the way, if you enjoy audio books, I first discovered this book on audio where Peter Coyote does a fantastic narration. I later acquired a paperback version so that I could highlight important sections and go back to re-read specific agreements when I floundered. And then I bought a lot more copies to give to friends and clients.

If you gain insights or would like to share any epiphanies you experience to help encourage others, please let us know on our Facebook or Instagram. We’re all on the same journey, but sharing it with others really helps us all grow.
